Ssi disability

Im ssi disability and have alot of debt,in the state of indiana my ssi cannot be garnished but they could supposedbly freeze my checking acct which i have my check direct deposited, sounds worse then garnishmnet, but was told by an attorney that all i would have to due is take ssi info into court and would be unfrozen but the way the system works here in indiana could take awhile, which would leave me with $0,not sure if its worth filing bankruptcy, they charge outrageous prices here and knowing they cant garnish i would rather keep $1500-$2000 which i dont have and would take 6 months to save, but concerned about the bank freeze.

You can file bankruptcy yourself for free rather than paying $2000 to a lawyer. My father went that route and we still haven't paid enough to the lawyer to get started on filing for bankruptcy yet, so I highly recommend you do it yourself rather than paying a leach of a lawyer to do it.

Because you're on SSI though, why don't you just put your money into the account of a caregiver instead? Does anyone help take care of you, do you have a significant other or anyone else you would trust to hold your money in their bank account? Even if you trust the person create a contract each month you receive your SSI payment saying that the person is currently holding the amount of $x for you.

You can also just receive your SSI payments as checks instead, cash them yourself and keep the money on hand. This will avoid having any account frozen at all.

The only way a creditor can get into your bank account is if they already have a court judgement for the debt. Have any of your creditors gotten to that point yet? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.
