Financial help during time of crisis

I have been diagnosed with cancer. Tumors found in left lung and liver. Biopsy was done yesterday on the liver. My wife and I have taken medical leave from our jobs. The only income we will have coming in for the next 3 months is my short term disability, approximately $300 per week. After that runs out all we will have is my social security which is $861 per month. It looks like a long bout of chemo will be coming. We relocated to North Carolina for 2 reasons, 1) the Cancer Center here and my son's invite to stay with him while we go through this difficult time.

My question is this, we are walking away from our mortgage in Florida, the mortgage is more than my social security check. We have a car payment in which we are trying to work out a much lower payment for the next 6 months. We pay for our own food and gas. It also looks like we will file bankruptcy on 2 credit cards we have which amount to about $10k.
My question is, is there any organizations we can appeal to to help us out financially? We are new to this area of High Point,NC and don't know where to turn. Medical bills are already putting a dent in our cash situation. We have a cushion of about $4000 in cash and like I said for the next 3 months $300 a week from disability and then down to $861 month. Any advice or organizations we can appeal to would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Check with the American Cancer Society. They are a good organization and, though they might not assist you financially, might be able to point you in the right direction.

You should also check with an attorney about declaring bankruptcy as you could probably include other bills, too. Your attorney may have some alternate suggestions on what to do about your house, too. You should be able to get free legal assistance if you can't afford to hire a lawyer.

If your medical insurance does not cover all of your medical bills, you might be able to negotiate with doctors and the hospital on those costs. Also, you can sometimes negotiate with drug companies on the price of medication as they will make special arrangements for people who can't afford their medications.

You can also contact social services to see if they can help you out.

Unfortunately, all of this requires a lot of phone calling and effort on your part during this difficult time in your life. I wish you well and hope that things work out medically as well as financially.
